Djerba making relaxing simple

Djerba a Mediterranean island of ten thousand palm trees  situated off the south east  coast of the Tunisian mainland, on the Gulfof Gabes where access to the mainland is gained by  a Roman causeway.  Just 3 hours flight from London,  Djerba is reputed to be the island of the lotus eaters in Homer's Odyssey.  The island has been popular tourist destination for many years for the French, Germans Italians , Czech’s and Tunisian’s with 45,000 of Tunisia’s hotel beds.  However, English tour operators have recently added the destination to there portfolio due to the hot summers and mild winters and miles of unspoilt sandy beaches, making an ideal summer or winter break.  From the beaches dolphins can often be seen playing in the clear blue sea.

Hotel infrastructure of the island of Djerba is very rich and varied from budget accommodation to 5 star luxury hotels with the vast majority of these resorts along the beach on the north east shore about 15km from the islands capital of Houmt Souk.   Houmt Souk is a bustling market place where tourists and local go to barter for goods. Recently a number of fixed price shops have started popping up and are always a good place to start to gauge the price before the haggling begins.  The town center is also the starting point for the convoy of galleon ships where tourist are taking  for a fun filled day out of barbecues, bathing and dolphin watching. The galleons are modeled on the once famous pirate ships of the area.

Djerba is a bit  of a pheonomena as far as religion goes with a mostly Muslim following of around 70,000 living in harmony with the 1000 or so ancient  Jewish community.  Due to the predominant religion being Muslim alcohol on the Island can be quite expensive and is mainly available only in the hotels and clubs with only one off licence on the island. However this makes it an attractive alternative for those wanting a different kind of holiday than the costas .
